28/02/2005 Oxfordshire LEA Ashbury with Compton Beauchamp C of E ( Aided) Primary School The children came up with the ideas themselves and a Quiz was set for for adults and children at £1 per entry and also the children made a list of chores and earned donations by doing jobs listed at home. We are a small school of 61 children and very proud of our children who wanted to help with this appeal. On top of cashed raised (£223)the local Military base requested specific items for sending out to areas of need and our generous children and parents donated a van ful;l of items.

We are a small school with only 10 pupils and we were delighted with our result. Also all proceeds from our school tuck shop on friday 21st Jan were also donated.

28/01/2005 Derby City Ashgate Nursery School Rainbow Week The children have painted a big rainbow and are going to come to nursery dressed in rainbow coloured clothes. They are asking relatives and friends for sponsor money which they will place on the rainbow during the week starting 7th February.

Each class ran their own stall or activity: Reception - sponsored obstacle course, Yr. 1 - White Elephant, Yr 2 - Books and Videos, Yr 3/4 - Tombola, Yr 4/5 Toys ans Sports Equipment, Yr 5/6 - Cakes. This took place on the 13th January and raised £670.00. Unfortunately we had not heard of this website then, is it too late to register our success now?

24/01/2005 Cheshire Ashton Hayes 'Tubes of change'- the children brought in tubes of various shapes and sizes full of loose change. Out of 150 pupils we raised over £600. There was also a non uniform day and the older children sold cakes and drinks. The total raised is around £1000

21/01/2005 Bristol Ashton Vale Primary School We are raising money through brown coin collections, sponsored events, an inside out clothes day and many other ways children think of. Each class has a map of the affected areas and they are filling it with stickers, one sticker for every £5.00 raised. This then goes onto a whole school map. The children are keen that this is an ongoing fund raising initiative as it will take many years to rebuild the communities affected.

18/02/2005 North Yorkshire LEA Aspin Park CP School, Knaresborough A total of £3288 has been raised by this school's parents, pupils and staff from a non-uniform day, donations, bring & buy sale and cake bake. The money has been used to buy three shelter boxes and four aqua boxes via Rotary International and a donation has also been made to the National Tsunami appeal.

28/02/2005 North Yorkshire LEA Aspin Park Primary School, Knaresborough The school raised over £3000 via donations, bring and buy sale, cake bakes etc. In conjunction with the Rotary Club the school was able to purchase survival boxes and aqua boxes as part of the relief effort. £817 was also donated to a local charity Friends of Mettupalayam who have a project to rebuild a village on the Indian coast.

We hope this will be just as successful.

01/02/2005 North Yorkshire LEA Braeburn Community Junior School, Scarborough We have a Tsunami Tree. This is a very large bare branch planted in a tub in the school entrance hall. It is covered with white lights. For a small donation children, parents, staff and visitors to the school can tie a piece of white lace ribbon to the tree. Our families have very little to give and to give small amounts is such a lot to them. So far we have raised approximately £200 which we think is fantastic. Each time a ribbon is tied the children stand quietly and give a special thought to the victims of the disaster.

03/02/2005 South Lanarkshire Council Braidwood Primary School Our school took part in a variety of events. Our P.1-3 children filled Smartie tubes with coins of their choice. Our P.3 children also had a Casual Clothes to school day. Our P.4 pupils gave up things like sweets and did jobs to help others. They used the money they raised to make towers of coins on a map of the countries affected by the Tsunami. Our P.5-7 pupils took part in a sponsored walk, completing circuits of our playground. Parents and friends added to a collection following our P.7 assembly on the Tsunami.

26/01/2005 East Riding of Yorkshire Brandesburton Primary School We all wore our pyjamas on the 7th January 2005 and paid a minimum of 50p to do so. The school council chose pyjamas because the tsunami hit the countries in the morning. We held an assembly to think about why we had done this, which was followed by circle time in each classroom to share thoughts and feelings. The children were very quiet and subdued that day. The total raised was £288.00. Many of the children insisted in donating their own money.

18/01/2005 Lincolnshire Branston C E Infant School FILL THE AEROPLANE WITH £1 COINS Children are cutting out paper £1 coin tokens for every £1 donated and attaching them onto large aeroplane pictures. 20/01/2005 South Lanarkshire Council Carluke Primary School Primary Seven Social Subjects Topic for this term was "India, a comparative study." In the light of the Tsunami, an Enterprise initiative was planned by the pupils. It was to hold a "Bring and Buy Sale" involving the whole school community. The class organised a buisness manager, secretaries, finance officials, sales organisers, collectors and publicity officers. The sale took a week to organise and was held in their classroom on Wednesday 19th January. All classes, including Nursery, were timetabled for the sale.

It was most entertaining as some of the Year 6 boys came dressed as their mothers!!! We had nurses, cheif of gas boards, opticians, shop managers, chefs and all sorts. Altogether raised £396.00. We are currently in the process of publishing a poetry book written by our Year 6 pupils for parents to purchase at a minimum of £3.00 contribution to the Tsunami Appeal.

It was a non-uniform day and everyone was invited to come in pyjamas and/or crazy hair and pay a 'fine' for doing so. During the morning each classroom put on an activity that all the children in the school could pay to take part in - things such as a Copper Trail, Name a Toy, Plant a Bulb, Sweeties in a Jar, Cake and Biscuit Stall. In the afternoon we held a Talent Show. In all we raised £ 674.71.

26/01/2005 Birmingham Colmers Farm Junior School On Friday 7th January, 2 days after returning to school, as a response to the disaster, we held a 'non-uniform' day where children had to pay £1.00 to come to school in their own clothes. In our assembly that day the head teacher informed the school that we had made £385.00 which had been paid into the local post office at lunchtime. Some of the children contributed more than the £1 suggestion, indeed many brought bags of 'copper' coins and pocket money! Many staff came in thier 'casual' clothes and contributed too.

02/02/2005 Hounslow Cranford Community college The school has already donated money raised during the autumn term though a school mufti day. Students also suggested giving their prize money for attendance and achieving the highest number of reward points under our Cranford Sheild initiative to the appeal. We also held a collection for tinned and dry foods, medicines and baby bottles which were transported as part of a container delivery with Anglo Pacific Shipping to South East Asia. During the whole of the spring term, the school is working raising money and support which will culminate in a whole school charities activities week, 28th February- 4th March 2005. 09/02/2005 Warrington Culcheth High School Staff and students were very keen to make a contribution to the appeal for help for the countries affected by the tsunami - staff and students responded superbly to the challenge and a grand total of £3,092 was raised for the Tsunami appeal. The money will be used to buy temporary shelters for Oxfam. The activities which contributed to this total were:- 1) a non-uniform day held on January 21st - this should have generated £1,344! However, there's more. 2) A staff v students pay-to-view basketball match. 3) A group of Y11 students busking in the Library. 4) A Y7 student at his flamboyant best emulating the style of his hero - Dr. Who. 5) A Safeways hamper raffle in the Staffroom. 6) Match-the-cash by Head of College. He matched the highest cash amount raised by a single College tutor group.

01/02/2005 Cheshire County Council Eaton Bank School Friday 21/01/05 - the day was designated 'Tsunami Appeal Day'. A decision was taken to approach the event in a reflective and serious manner. Parents received a letter informing them of the intention for the day and asking for support for our appeal. The whole school (year 7 - 13) had Tsunami lesson for 30 mins at the beginning of the day to collectively think about and discuss what had happened, how it had happened, the impact on the lives of the people involved, the impact on our lives, our response as individuals and our response as a school community. The lesson highlighted the 'global citizen' aspect of our citizenship studies. Students were invited to donate whatever monies they felt appropriate.

21/01/2005 Cardiff Eglwys Wen Primary School, Whitchurch, Cardiff Tuesday 11th January 2005 The children came up with lots of ideas to raise money for the Tsunami Disaster Appeal. The many stalls included shoe shining, nail painting, hair gels, homemade cakes, various games organised by the children themselves, penalty shoot outs, selling left over chocolates and sweets from Christmas, a number of different raffles, stalls selling toys and books that the children no longer needed. We also received some cash donations and parcels containing soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, bandages and fresh bottled water. The efforts of the pupils and staff helped raise the magnificent sum of £740.

The children met the headteacher on the first day of the spring term term and asked what we were going to do! The plan was in place in 10 minutes and everyone helped. A special effort in a non affluent area! Top children!

21/01/2005 Barnet Fairway Primary School The children wanted to raise money for the tsunami victims and came up with the idea of a talent show. The children paid £2 entry (although some paid much more) and adults paid £4 to watch or take part. It was a great success and we raised £1077.30, which is a magnificent amount, especially for a small school.

It was suggested they pay £1 donation but most families sent much more. Special assembly with parents on the same day and a collection held. Children wrote prayers some of which were published in the local newspaper - Pudsey Times - along with a photograph of our donation cheque and some Year 6 children. TOTAL RAISED £765.46

27/01/2005 Medway Local Education Authority Featherby Junior School The children of Featherby Juniors held 'Funky Follicle Challenge Day' on Friday 14th January 2005 in conjunction with several other schools across the Medway area. In our school, we raised in excess of £700 towards the Tsunami Appeal. We also lent our school premises to the Rotary Club of Medway during the Christmas holidays to be used as a drop-off point and packing area for their collection of clothes/household goods to be sent to the people of Sri Lanka.

21/01/2005 Dorset Ferndown First School On Monday 10 January the children at Ferndown First School placed their hard-earned pocket money and other generous donations onto a large map of the world. The children raised a total of £690.00 and then, with the backing of the school council, the school decided that the money that had been raised from the Christmas performance ticket sales to buy books for the school should also go to the Disaster fund totalling £300.00. This made a grand total of £960.00.

01/02/2005 North Yorkshire LEA Filey CE VC Infant and Nursery School Collected loose change from family and friends for a week. On 21 January we drew outline maps of Sri Lanka and filled them with the money, filling 67 in total. We are delighted to say we raised £420 for the appeal, which is especially pleasing as one of our families have relations in Sri Lanka who have suffered quite badly.

21/01/2005 Hampshire Forest Edge Special School Our School Council met at the start of term to discuss their fund raising ideas. They selected 2 events which will take place during the Spring Term. The first is a sponsored Ball Bounce to be held on Wednesday 26th January. The children have to see how many times they can bounce a ball per minute and each bounce is sponsored! Parents/carers and friends of the children will come to school for the afternoon to cheer them all on. The second event starts on Monday 21st February when all the children will be invited to design a badge to show they are supporting the appeal.Each pupil's design will be made into a badge and then sold at the end of the week.

We will be sending our money to Unicef because it is a child based charity. Our community is extremely culturally diverse and 78% of the children in the school speak English as an additional language. People in this community do not have a lot of money so £250.00 represents a huge effort and wonderful generosity.

Younger children had completed the activity at home with the help of parents, carers and siblings. The activity was enjoyed by all and raised lots of questions and answers regarding spelling, word classification etc. To date we have raised in excess of £300.00 - a good effort for a small village school with only 61 pupils!

A special Tsunami appeal assembly will be hosted by Years 5 & 6 Monday 17th January to Friday 28th January During this period, pupils with parental support, are asked to be innovative in fund raising; perhaps by giving up something they enjoy and by so doing raise additional funds for the disaster appeal. Certificates celebrating and recognising pupils and parents efforts will be presented at a communal gathering.

Then to add to our total a parent who owns a Balti Takeaway donated the whole of their takings and staff wages on Friday 14th February - a staggering £703!!!. We are proud of the generosity of everyone involved with our school.

How it worked was that each of our 18 classes set up a stall in the school yard during playtime. Children brought items they considered to be worth around 50p. Parents, staff and children helped to run the stalls and children could move round from stall to stall spending their 50p's. WE RAISED £600

26/01/2005 Milton Keynes Greenleys First School We created a large outline floor map (3m by 3m) of the Indian Ocean and surrounding countries. Children (aged 4 to 8 years in our school), parents, staff and friends collected copper and silver coins. The copper coins were used to fill in the land areas and the silver coins became the sea. We learned a lot about the countries affected as we were building up the map over a week. The children were very excited as the shapes of the countries appeared. They counted the coins and were amazed when the total came to £346.06 plus 17.87 in euros! We have a phot we could e-mail if needed.

20/01/2005 Wiltshire Hardenhuish School All events are organised by the School Council. 1. White ribbons are being sold to wear alongside school uniform as a mark of respect, remembrance and hope. This has already been running for a week and will be a continuous event. 2. As part of the National Youth Parliament response, we are holding a Mufti Day on Friday 21st January. As well as a monetary donation, students are asked to bring in an item of stationery. We are in the process of establishing a direct link with a school, and would hope that collecting these valuable (yet often overlooked) items would reaffirm what the Mufti Day is for. 3. A rock concert has been arranged for Tuesday 26th January, organised by Year 11 and a second concert involving bands from Year 10 and 13 set for Thursday 28th January. Both concerts will take place at lunchtime in one of the school halls. Students are asked to make a contribution to attend. 4. There will be boxes/tubs next to all tills in the canteens throughout next week for people to put any loose change into. 5. We also have a Message Board outside one of the halls, in which staff and students can write a message, which can then be added to the board. This is not a fundraiser, but an opportunity to reflect on the events that have occurred and the current situation.

04/02/2005 Bradford LEA Heaton Primary School Our School Council organised several fundraising events such as a non uniform day; a teddy tombola for which the children donated hundreds of teddies and then paid 20p a go to win one; a biscuit and cake stall, a greeting card stall selling a range of cards including some beautiful ones that had been hand made by the children using special kits and finally we had a collection jar in each class. One 7 year old little girl saw the devestation on the telly and then asked her parents if they, and the rest of her family, would mind not buying her any birthday presents for her 8th birthday, but instead would they give her money so she could donate it to the tsunami appeal! She then gave all £125 she had recieved to the appeal. Other children too gave their Eid money, spending money or just all the coppers they had saved. In total the children raised £1,183.25

To date we have collected in excess of £1,100 which we are proposing to split between two local charities - The Friends of Mettupalayam and the Robin Needham Memorial Fund. Robin was an ex-pupil of the school who was tragically killed in the disaster. Part of the sponsorship will go towards rebuilding the villages around Golden Buddha Beach near Phuket where he died.

20/01/2005 Norfolk Hevingham and Marsham Primary School Partnership We are two small schools in Norfolk working together in Partnership. We share some staff and our Head teacher works at both schools. Together we have collected a mini-bus full of different items to be sorted and placed in 'Aquaboxes'. The Aquaboxes can hold many litres of unclean water; they filter the water clean as it leaves the tap on the box. The items we have collected are the sort of basic things that you need every day just to 'get by'. The schools have raised enough money for two Aquaboxes so far we expect to raise more. We are also holding class and school based events such as Talent Shows and School Fairs. We have talked about the Tsunami and its devastating effects in our assesmblies and our classes. Then the children filled the empty smartie tubes with 5p's or 20p's. When full they exchanged the full tube for the smarties. We have raised £515 so far but the fundraising is ongoing.The local Halifax bank is going to match whatever we raise.

04/03/2005 Devon Ilfracombe Infant & Nursery School A sponsored ride around the school playground on two-wheeled, push along scooters saw the whole school community join in, with 370 youngsters plus staff. This together with collection jars throughout the school provided a substantial donation of £2,500 to add to the North Devon School's appeal for a new school in Sri Lanka. A further £1,400 sent via Tear Fund to the Emmanuel Hospital Association to help children in India, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. "We are really proud of the children's efforts to raise so much in such a positive way", said headteacher Christine Thompson.

Each class had 20 minutes on the slide, even the staff had their turn. BAD TASTE/WACKY HAIR DAY - children and staff dressed in bad-taste and/or had a wacky hair style for the day and paid at least 50p for the privilege. CAKES - Four Year 4 girls took it upon themselves to make cakes and sell them to the rest of their class. All this happened on 21.1.05 and we raised £455.80

Pupils were allowed to choose whatever they thought would raise the most money as their sponsored event. Events have included things such as staff v pupil netball and volleyball, darts, cricket, horse riding, car washing, walking backwards,being silent, cycling, leg waxing, to name but a few! In addition to this we have had a chocolate raffle and a 'bring and buy' sale. Our week finishes tonight with a concert featuring pupils and staff.

Following publicity on local radio we also received direct contributions from the public. We raised £7000! The BBC has put us in contact with Sudharma College in Galle and we are setting up an on-going link to continue support and contact between our 2 schools.

Year 1 are collecting up to 20 different materials and naming them - all items to fit inside a school milk carton, and Year 2 are jogging around the playground car-track for as many times as they can in a set time. Many activities will reinforce curriculum areas and encourage responsibility.

20/01/2005 Lincolnshire Lincoln St. Christopher's Special School Lincoln St Christopher's held a 'Make a Wish' appeal. From Monday 17th through to Friday 21st Pupils were given the opportunity to visit our school's new Atrium to throw coins into the water fountain and make a wish. The Atrium had been stocked with plants that have origins in the area of the Tsunami. For the aid appeal, it was decorated with flags of the countries involved along with facts about how they have been affected. Our Atrium was the ideal place to in which to have a few moments quiet thought. We asked our pupils to think about what they would wish for if 'their world' had been washed away and they were left with nothing. Parents were invited to take their children to the Atrium and make wishes with them.

25/01/2005 Bedfordhire Linslade Middle School Friday 21st January - whole school dressed in main colours of flags of those affected countries, at a charge! Raised £1,073.07 The afternoon was full of activities, such as swimming,netball and football tournaments, an auction of toys, puppet show - Raised £254.51 We also held sponsored timetables and spelling tests - money still coming in - watch this space! Extra money arraiving all the time from children who have raised funds themselves

21/01/2005 London Borough Greenwich Linton Mead school We turned the school upside down ! The staff wore school uniform and the pupils came in home clothes. Everyone brought a pound. One of our support staff sold some beautiful Indian tops for £4.00 each, and we had a quiet thought for the children in Indonesia.

14/02/2005 North Yorkshire LEA Linton on Ouse Primary School The children in the older class organised a Coffee Morning/Bring and Buy sale. We are only a small school of 79 pupils but we raised £369.21. In addition to home made cakes, the children organised a Penalty Shoot out, Limbo Dancing, Lucky Dip, Guess the Name of the Teddy and many more activities. We donated the money to Unicef as they were providing "School in a Box" and "Sport in a Box" which pupils thought were great ideas.

21/01/2005 Lincolnshire Little Gonerby Church of England Infant School SAFE CLEAN WATER DAY - FRIDAY 21ST JANUARY 2005 Children made a donation for being able to bring their water bottle to school. Everyone dressed in blue clothes and we sang as many watery songs as we could think of. Our children hope their fund raising efforts will help towards the provision of safe drinking water for families affected by the disaster.

Earlier in the week, our dinner ladies baked delicious cookies for sale at morning break on Wednesday and Thursday. They all sold out very quickly! Total raised was £170.00 from 83 children and staff.
